1964年（昭和39年）７月７日生まれ。神奈川県大磯町出身。血液型Ａ型。早稲田大学卒業後、亜細亜堂に入社。アニメーター（動画）、演出助手を経て1989年演出家に。 　主な参加作品は『ちびまる子ちゃん』、『赤ずきんチャチャ』。『飛べ！イサミ』（1995年）でＴＶシリーズ初監督。次いで『機動戦艦ナデシコ』（1996年）、劇場版『機動戦艦ナデシコ』（1998年）を手がける。湯浅政明と組んだ『ねこぢる草』では、モントリオール・ファンタジア映画祭の最優秀短編賞と批評家賞、文化庁メディア芸術祭の優秀賞を受賞。自身のオリジナル作品である『学園戦記ムリョウ』では、原作と全話の脚本も担当（いずれも2001年）。 　最新作は『TOKYO TRIBE2』（2006〜2007年）。現在オリジナル新作を準備中。 　 Tatsuo Sato was born on July 7,1964, in O-iso, Kanagawa. After being graduated from Waseda University, he started his career as an animator and an assistant director at Asia-Do. Since he became a director in 1989, he has served as the animation director on some episodes of several TV animation series: "Chibi Maruko-chan", "Akazukin Chacha", etc. Tatsuo made his solo directorical debut in 1995 with the TV animation series "Soar High! Isami". After that, he directed the TV series "Martian Successor Nadesico"(1996) and its sequel feature film "Martian Successor Nadesico: The Motion Picture - Prince Of Darkness"(1998). In 2001, Tatsuo collaborated on the avant-garde animation film "Cat Soup" with an old friend, animator/director Masaaki Yuasa. The film won double prizes in the 6th Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal: "Best Short Film" and "Film Critic's Association Prize". It was also the winnner of the 2001 Agency for Cultural Affairs' "Excellence Prize" at Japan's Media Arts Festival. In the same year, he released the TV animation series "Shingu: Secret Of The Stellar Wars" which was based on his own original story. Tatsuo's latest animation TV series are "TOKYO TRIBES", made in 2006.He is also developing a new animation project.
